Residency learning experiences

Internal Medicine (five weeks plus elective option)

The residents will be responsible for identifying and resolving medication therapy issues and will work toward assuming care of all patients on the unit. They will actively participate in multidisciplinary rounds. Preceptor: Zachary Moszscenski, PharmD, BCPS

Integrated Care (four weeks)

The residents will be responsible for ensuring safe and effective medication use and distribution for their assigned patient care units. They will work with the nurses and physicians to provide excellent pharmaceutical services, including pharmacokinetic consults, medication dosing consults, and patient counseling. Preceptor: Chelsea Meczkowksi, PharmD

Antibiotic Stewardship (five weeks plus elective option)

The residents will be responsible for identifying and resolving medication therapy services for patients on the Infectious Disease (ID) service, as well as making appropriate recommendations. They will also review antibiotics for appropriateness based upon culture and sensitivities and evaluate duration of therapy. Residents will likely participate in the Antibiotic Stewardship Committee. Administration (five weeks plus elective option)

The Administration rotation will help residents become familiar with key principles used in hospitals and health systems for leadership and pharmacy administration. The syllabus is designed to expose the learner to leadership and administrative nomenclature, key principles, tools, and available resources. The learner will participate in several activities designed to improve their working knowledge and experience with leadership skills. Preceptor: Karen Scott, RPh, MBA

Cardiology (elective option)

The residents will be part of the multidisciplinary health care team and will apply pharmacologic knowledge of cardiac medications to make guideline-based recommendations. Preceptor: John Love, PharmD, MBA, BCPS

Critical Care (five weeks plus elective option)

Pharmacy residents on rotation in the intensive care units will be responsible for providing excellent pharmaceutical care for patients who are in need of critical care services. They will actively participate in the care of patients and help recommend drug therapy for a spectrum of diseases and conditions, working with a multidisciplinary team rounding daily in the ICU. They will be responsible for providing pharmacokinetic consults, medication dosing consults, and nutrition services, and be available as a resource for drug information for other health professionals. Emergency Medicine (five weeks plus elective option)

Pharmacy residents on rotation in the Emergency Department will be responsible for providing optimal drug management for patients who need emergent care. They will actively participate in the care of patients and help recommend drug therapy for a spectrum of diseases and conditions, from acute pharyngitis to advanced cardiac life support. They educate patients about their medications and be available as a resource for drug information for other emergency health professionals. Internal Medicine — Precepting (elective option) 

This learning experience will build upon the Internal Medicine experiences focusing on precepting APPE and/or IPPE students. Residents will be responsible for identifying and resolving medication therapy issues and assuming care of all patients on the unit. Preceptor: Jacklyn A Harris, PharmD, BCPS 

Drug Information/Drug Policy Development (elective option) 

This learning experience will give residents practical experience in providing unbiased drug information to health care professionals and patients, and to participate in the drug use policy process. This learning experience will take place at the Drug Information Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Preceptor: Heather Mandeville, PharmD, BCPS 

Medication-Use Process — Orientation to Staffing (six weeks) 

This learning experience provides an orientation to the inpatient pharmacy staffing and the residency program. The focus of this learning experience will be on orientation to staffing and the development of proficiency in general departmental and operational procedures. Preceptors: Jacklyn A Harris, PharmD, Chelsea Meczkowksi, PharmD, Christine Riat, PharmD, BCSCP

Medication-Use Process — Staffing (10 months) 

This longitudinal learning experience begins after Orientation to Staffing in August. This experience is designed to ensure the resident develops competency in the ability to provide care for hospitalized patients. The resident will be responsible for assisting in the workflow on their assigned weekend shifts. Resident Education Academy (12 months) 

Residents will participate in the Resident Education Academy offered by St. Louis College of Pharmacy at the University of Health Sciences & Pharmacy in St. Louis in order to achieve a teaching certificate. Residents will work together to prepare learning materials to deliver an education session to students in the spring semester. Preceptor: Jacklyn A. Harris, PharmD, BCPS 

Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehab (12 months) 

The longitudinal learning experience will encompass Cardiac Rehab, Pulmonary Rehab, and Diabetic education. The residents will lead medication education classes to the patients participating in the outpatient Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabs. Additionally, residents will also have the opportunity to educate our inpatient diabetic patients. Preceptor: John Love, PharmD, MBA, BCPS 

Pharmacy Practice Project: Project Design (four months) 

This learning experience is one of three concentrated experiences for the residents’ longitudinal Pharmacy Practice Project. During this experience, residents will determine their research idea and develop their study design and methods with the goal of submitting to Institutional Review Board (IRB) before the end of the learning experience. This learning experience spans from July to October. Preceptor: Jacklyn A. Harris, PharmD, BCPS 

Pharmacy Practice Project: Managing Data (five months) 

This learning experience is the second concentrated experience for the residents’ longitudinal Pharmacy Practice Project. This concentrated experience will last from November to March. During this experience, residents will work on data collection and management. Preceptor: Jacklyn A. Harris, PharmD, BCPS

Pharmacy Practice Project: Analyzing/Presenting Data (three months)

This is the last concentrated learning experience for the residents’ longitudinal Pharmacy Practice Project. This concentrated experience will last from April until June. During this experience, residents will complete data collection and begin analyzing their data. Residents will present their research results at the local Residency Research Conference and to the appropriate committee(s) at Christian Hospital. Residents will also write up their project for the Physician News newsletter. Preceptor: Jacklyn A. Harris, PharmD, BCPS

Transitions of Care (elective option)

The residents will be responsible for providing discharge counseling for patients with a history of 

readmissions. In addition, the residents may complete both admission and discharge medication 

reconciliation. Preceptor: Jacklyn A. Harris, PharmD, BCPS

Sterile and Non-Sterile Compounding (elective option)

Sterile and Non-Sterile Compounding is an elective four-week learning experience for pharmacy practice (PGY1) residents at Christian Hospital. This experience will give residents in-depth exposure to the standards and regulations that ensure all compounded preparations are safe and effective for patients. Activities will include but are not limited to: preparing and checking compounded preparations, monitoring competencies, reviewing standard operating procedures, writing master formulary records, developing training or educational materials, understanding environmental monitoring and certifications, and developing quality control action plans. Pain and Palliative Care (elective option)

The Pain and Palliative Care is an elective four-week learning experience designed to provide residents with comprehensive training in managing pain and palliative care pharmacotherapy. This learning experience will emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration, effective communication, and the development of clinical skills necessary for optimizing medication management in patients with complex pain management needs and end of life goals of care.
