Prepare for your stay

Becoming a Patient

When a procedure or illness requires an overnight stay, the physicians, nurses, staff, and volunteers at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital are committed to giving you an excellent experience. When preparing for an inpatient stay, there are a few things to know before you arrive.

What to bring

  • Personal Items: Comfortable clothing, toiletries, and any assistive devices (e.g., glasses, hearing aids).
  • Identification: A photo ID, such as a driver's license, passport, or state-issued ID.
  • Insurance Information: Bring all applicable insurance cards and any necessary authorization forms.
  • Medications: A complete list of your current medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and supplements.
  • Emergency Contacts: Names and phone numbers of family or friends to contact during your stay.
  • Advance Directives: If applicable, provide a copy of your living will or durable power of attorney for health care.

What to leave at home

  • Jewelry or other valuables
  • Luggage and other large personal belongings

We recommended having someone drive you home after your procedure or overnight stay.

In most cases, you will be given specific registration instructions when you make your appointment. For some scheduled procedures, you may be able to preregister, to expedite the process on the day of your visit. Your length of stay will be determined by your care team.

Inpatient and Outpatient Services

Several services have separate registration within their departments. Please clarify when scheduling your procedure.
