Newborn Screenings

Newborn screenings are routine tests performed soon after birth to make sure your baby is healthy. A simple blood test and hearing evaluation can detect certain conditions that aren’t visible right away, allowing doctors to act early and give your baby the best possible start.

Why choose us for newborn screening?

BJC HealthCare and WashU Medicine physicians deliver coordinated, high-quality care for patients and families. As part of that care, all newborns in Missouri receive a simple blood test to screen for disorders that may not be apparent immediately after birth, including certain genetic, metabolic, blood, and hormone-related conditions. Additionally, there are two point-of-care screenings included in Missouri’s Newborn Screening program: newborn hearing screening and critical congenital heart disease screening.

These screenings play an important role in identifying health issues early, when timely diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve outcomes.
