When you choose our care team you’ll find:

  • Recognized expertise: Our cardiovascular programs at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital have received High Performing recognition from U.S. News & World Report. We stand out for our expertise in specialty areas such as cardiology, heart surgery and heart failure care.

  • Collaborative team: We bring together heart specialists from several fields, including general cardiology, heart surgery, vascular surgery, heart imaging and critical care. These experts work together to plan your treatment.

  • Focus on prevention and early diagnosis: Your cardiologist works closely with you to prevent or reduce your risk of heart disease and cardiac events. We monitor your health and detect warning signs as early as possible with screening, lifestyle changes and advanced cardiovascular testing.

  • Minimally invasive treatments: Our experts in interventional cardiology and electrophysiology specialize in catheter-based procedures. They treat your heart through tiny incisions using catheters (thin, flexible tubes), so you don’t need open-heart surgery. Minimally invasive procedures involve fewer risks. You also recover faster and with less pain.

  • Comprehensive specialty care: We help people with unique cardiovascular risk factors get the care they need. Our highly trained cardiologists have experience in specialty areas such as women’s heart disease, sports cardiology and cardio-oncology. This depth and breadth of expertise is hard to find elsewhere.

When should I see a cardiologist?

A cardiologist is a doctor who specializes in heart care. They evaluate you to find out if you’re at risk of heart disease or a cardiac event, like a heart attack.

Cardiologists focus on heart disease prevention. They do screening tests and recommend lifestyle adjustments to improve your heart health. A cardiologist also coordinates your care with other heart specialists, such as heart or vascular surgeons, when necessary.

It may be time to see a cardiologist if you:

  • Have a family history of heart disease

  • Have a history of smoking

  • Have heart disease risk factors such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol

  • Receive a referral to a cardiologist from your primary care provider

  • Are an adult with congenital heart disease (heart disease you were born with)

You should also see a cardiologist if you have symptoms of:

  • Chest pain, pressure or discomfort

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Dizziness

  • Fainting

  • Heart palpitations

  • Shortness of breath

  • Swollen legs

What can I expect during my cardiology appointment?

Feeling a little anxious before your first visit with your cardiologist is normal. We’re here to put your mind at ease. Your care team will give you detailed instructions about what you need to do on the day of your appointment. We’ll also tell you what to bring to your first visit.

After you’ve arrived and checked in, here’s what to expect during your appointment:

  • Your first appointment may last up to an hour.

  • You may first see a nurse practitioner, who takes your blood pressure, weighs you and asks you some general health questions.

  • Your cardiologist asks you more specific questions about your medical history, symptoms and other details.

  • You’ll have a physical exam. Your cardiologist may recommend tests, if needed, to confirm a diagnosis. Usually, you’ll schedule tests for another day.

  • Your cardiologist explains any findings from their evaluation and answers your questions. We discuss recommendations for the next steps in your care, such as follow-up visits, tests or treatment.
