Routine mammograms can keep you healthy

Early-stage breast cancer is treatable and has a high survival rate, which is why getting an annual mammogram is so important. The American Cancer Society recommends women with no family history of breast cancer start annual mammograms at age 40. For those with a family history or other risk factors, screening may be recommended earlier. Please speak with your provider about the right time to start annual mammograms.

If you cannot afford a mammogram, you may be eligible for a free exam through one of Missouri Baptist Breast HealthCare Center’s grant programs.

To see if you qualify, please contact our grant outreach coordinator at 314-996-7585

What is a breast nurse navigator?

A breast cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming—but you’re not alone. At the Breast HealthCare Center at Missouri Baptist, each patient is supported by a nurse navigator who will clearly explain your results, guide your next steps, and help coordinate your care, including:

  • Follow up after your biopsy to review results
  • Coordinate care with your care team
  • Answer questions so you can make informed decisions
  • Provide emotional support for you and your family
  • Connect you with helpful resources, including counseling, social work, and nutrition services
  • Serve as your main point of contact throughout your care

Frequently asked questions

When should I get a mammogram?

Early detection saves lives. Routine annual mammograms are recommended for most women beginning at age 40 if you don’t have a family history of breast cancer. Your provider can help you determine the right schedule based on your individual risk factors and health history. If you notice changes in your breasts, reach out to your provider to see if a mammogram is right for you.

What is 3D mammography?

3D mammography takes multiple X-ray images of the breast from different angles, creating a three-dimensional picture. It can detect cancer earlier and more accurately than standard 2D mammography—especially for women with dense breast tissue. We offer 3D mammography at all five of our St. Louis area locations.

What's the difference between a screening and a diagnostic mammogram?

A screening mammogram is a routine check for women without symptoms, used to detect changes early. A diagnostic mammogram is ordered when there's a specific area of concern that needs additional imaging. Our team will guide you to the right type of exam for your situation.

What happens if something is found?

If an area of concern is detected, we'll contact you promptly and schedule any follow-up imaging or testing needed. Your dedicated nurse navigator will answer your questions, coordinate your appointments, and connect you with support at every step.

Do you offer genetic counseling?

Yes. We provide personalized breast cancer risk assessments, genetic counseling, and customized monitoring plans for patients who have a family history of breast cancer or other genetic risk factors. Our specialized nurses will navigate you to the right exams, resources, and care options based on your level of risk.
