The planning for renovation and new construction with the Campus Renewal Project has been a long-term vision to renew the medical campus encompassing BJC’s Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital along with WashU Medicine.

Through renovations and new construction, we have created an environment and experience for patients and their families that matches the excellence in medical care they expect. Private inpatient rooms are a key component of the overall project along with major improvements to open and public areas and to patient/visitor parking, arrival and departure. 
 

Current work

Phases 3-4: Barnes-Jewish Plaza West Tower and Plaza Tower Renovations

Continuing through late 2026, the Plaza Entry portion of the project includes a complete transformation along Barnes Jewish Plaza, including a new lobby in the garage and pedestrian bridge, new and expanded patient drop off, and renovated and expanded street and main level lobbies. 

Plaza West Tower at Barnes-Jewish Hospital opened in October 2025. The 16-story Plaza West Tower features 224 private inpatient rooms and 56 private intensive care unit (ICU) rooms for heart and vascular patients. 

Modern surgery prep and recovery floors serve the operating rooms in adjacent buildings. State-of-the-art radiology and imaging rooms, including new MRIs, CT scanners and more, primarily serve our inpatient population. A bright, new cafeteria with outdoor seating, rooftop gardens, and a family lounge with business center and quiet areas round out the tower.

Previous phases

Campus renewal phase 1:  Barnes-Jewish Parkview Tower and St. Louis Children’s expansion

Phase 1 of the Campus Renewal Project was realized in early 2018 when Barnes-Jewish Hospital opened Parkview Tower which consolidated and expanded expanding inpatient cancer care with 185 private inpatient rooms.

The facility also houses Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s Women & Infants program, in partnership with St. Louis Children’s Hospital, which co-locates labor and delivery with the St. Louis Children’s Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Also in 2018, the 220,000-square-foot St. Louis Children’s Hospital expansion opened, with 96 additional inpatient beds, an expanded NICU and a second outdoor garden. 

Other components of Phase 1 included a new 3,000-care staff garage and elevated pedestrian walkway, which both opened in 2015, connecting four staff garages with the medical center complex.

Campus renewal phase 2

Renovations to East and West Pavilions at Barnes-Jewish Hospital were completed in 2019. A new Ameren electrical substation was built and electrical infrastructure upgrades were completed in 2020. Queeny Tower demolition was completed fourth quarter 2021.
