Our Services
Our weight loss treatments can improve the quality of your life and help reduce the symptoms of diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and chronic joint and back pain. Our physicians will work with you to develop a customized treatment plan that fits your goals, lifestyle, and health history.
Non-Surgical Weight Loss
Our knowledgeable physicians, known as gastroenterologists, offer several FDA-approved non-surgical treatments for weight loss. These procedures are done with an endoscope, a thin, flexible tube equipped with a camera. Because these procedures have lower excess weight requirements to qualify, they can be safe, effective treatment options for patients with mild to moderate obesity. If you're not a candidate for bariatric surgery and haven't succeeded at diet and exercise alone, our non-surgical treatments will assist you in achieving long-term weight loss.
Surgical Weight Loss
At BJC, our experienced surgeons diagnose and treat hundreds of patients each year. Most bariatric surgical options are minimally invasive with smaller incisions. This helps patients jumpstart their recovery and weight loss progress. Surgery consultations before and after surgery with dietitians, physical therapists, and behavioral coaches will keep you on the right track to help you achieve your weight loss goals.

Frequently asked questions
What weight-loss treatment options does BJC HealthCare offer?
BJC HealthCare offers a range of weight loss treatments for those living with obesity and related health conditions including medical weight management, gastric bypass, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve), duodenal switch, intragastric balloon, endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, endoscopic gastric outlet repair, and revision procedures.
What’s the difference between bariatric surgery and bariatric endoscopy?
Bariatric surgery requires an operation, while bariatric endoscopy uses minimally invasive, nonsurgical procedures. Bariatric endoscopy is available at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital. These may be an option for some people who aren’t candidates for or don’t want traditional bariatric surgery.
How do you determine which bariatric procedure is right for me?
There isn’t one bariatric procedure that is best for everyone. Your care team will consider factors such as your health history, weight, weight-related health conditions, previous surgeries, lifestyle, and weight-loss goals when recommending a procedure.
How long will I stay in the hospital?
The length of your hospital stay depends on the type of procedure you have and your individual recovery. Many patients go home within 1 to 2 days after bariatric surgery. Your surgeon will give you specific expectations before your procedure.
How quickly does weight loss usually happen?
Weight loss varies from person to person and depends on factors such as your starting weight, treatment plan, and overall health. If you have bariatric surgery, weight loss is typically greatest during the first several months and then gradually slows as you approach a healthier, more stable weight. Nonsurgical weight-loss programs may have a different timeline. Your care team can help you set realistic weight-loss goals and track your progress over time.
What's the biggest misconception people have about weight loss today?
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to weight loss. What works for one person may not work for another, and some people may need more support than nutrition and exercise alone can provide. Medical and surgical weight-loss options can provide additional tools for people who need them. A health care professional can help you understand which options may be right for you.
How do I decide which weight-loss treatment option is right for me?
The right weight-loss approach depends on your health, weight, medical history, and individual goals. Some people may benefit from surgery, while others may be candidates for nonsurgical options. Your health care professional can help you understand which options may be appropriate for you.
BJC HealthCare weight-loss programs offer medically supervised support that may include nutrition, physical activity, behavioral health, and medical or surgical treatment, depending on your needs.
What support do you provide to help me lose weight and keep it off?
Weight loss involves more than a single treatment. Our programs provide support throughout your weight-loss journey, with services that may include medical or surgical care, nutrition, physical activity, behavioral health, and follow-up care. Your care team will work with you to develop a plan based on your needs and goals.
How do I start my weight-loss journey with BJC?
Getting started begins with a consultation to discuss your health, weight-loss history, and goals. Your care team will recommend the next steps based on your needs, which may include health, nutrition and behavioral assessments, education, and insurance requirements. If surgery is recommended, your care team will explain what to expect and help you prepare for your weight-loss journey.
