Why choose us for movement disorder care?

BJC HealthCare works with Washington University physicians, BJC Medical Group, and providers across the region to deliver extraordinary care. When you choose one of our specialists, you will find leading-edge care delivered with compassion. We aim to make your treatment journey as smooth as possible, helping you find therapies that effectively manage symptoms and improve your quality of life.

You benefit from:

  • Recognized excellence: The Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA) has designated the Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University Department of Neurology as a Center of Excellence for Huntington’s disease care. Our center offers the best clinical care and services for those affected by Huntington’s disease in the Midwest area, including Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Arkansas and Southern Illinois.

  • Convenient care: We aim to make it as easy as possible to access the services you need. To assist our patients, laboratory testing and radiology services are conveniently located within the same complex.

  • Specialized treatments: Our neurologists offer one of the largest injection clinics in the nation. These specialized treatments can lessen symptoms of debilitating neurologic disorders, including involuntary, repetitive muscle contractions and uncontrolled shaking.

  • Expert neurosurgery: The Neuroscience Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is one of the top five centers in the United States in terms of the number of deep brain stimulation (DBS) procedures performed. Our specialists have used DBS to treat hundreds of patients with Parkinson’s disease, helping them return to many of their usual activities with reduced need for medication.

Movement disorders we treat

We specialize in research and treatment of all movement disorders in adults and children.

Memory disorders we treat include:

  • Dystonia
Involuntary muscle contractions affect one or more parts of your body. These contractions can cause repetitive movements, twisting or cramps.
  • Essential tremor
You experience involuntary and repetitive, rhythmic shaking. Essential tremor usually affects your hands, but can also affect your arms, legs, head or voice.
  • Huntington's disease
This hereditary condition causes progressive nerve cell breakdown in your brain. This leads to problems with movement, cognitive skills and emotional regulation.
  • Parkinson's disease
This progressive nervous system disorder occurs when nerve cell damage leads to a drop of dopamine. Symptoms include tremors, stiffness, balance problems or slow movements.
  • Startle syndromes
These conditions are characterized by irregular or exaggerated startle reactions, especially in response to loud noises.
  • Tourette syndrome
This condition is characterized by repetitive twitches, sounds or movements known as tics. Tourette syndrome often starts in childhood.

Movement disorder treatments we offer

Many movement disorders don’t have a cure, but treatment can help manage symptoms. Our specialists create personalized treatment plans to help control your symptoms and increase your quality of life.

Treatments may include:

Medications for movement disorders
Oral medicines can help control irregular movement, ease stiffness and lessen tremors.
BOTOX therapy
Regular BOTOX injections can help relax muscles and reduce muscle spasms.
Focused ultrasound therapy
We use high-intensity focused ultrasound waves to heat and strategically destroy certain areas of brain tissue without making any incisions.
Specialized physical therapy, occupational therapy or speech therapy may help improve motor symptoms associated with a movement disorder.
Deep brain stimulation
If other treatments don't control symptoms, we may offer deep brain stimulation (DBS), in which we implant a small device that sends electrical pulses to your brain.
