Celebrating the 20 years since its naming, Siteman Cancer Center hosted a Nov. 12 event featuring the lighting of a unique candle on its sign on Parkview Tower. The candle, designed and installed by the team led by Nancy Coleman, BJC design director, will replace the “I” in the Siteman sign until April 1.

In addition to recognizing Siteman’s two decades, the event across the street from Parkview Tower celebrated the 1 million patients treated at Siteman since Nov. 2, 1999.

“If it weren’t for each and every one of you, Siteman Cancer Center would not be where it is today, 20 years after its birth,” Siteman director Timothy Eberlein, MD, told the crowd of 75 cancer center leaders, physicians, staff members and others on top of Laclede Garage.

In 1999, Alvin and Ruth Siteman’s gift of $35 million established the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. Since then, it has grown to six locations, including the newest, Siteman Cancer Center at Northwest HealthCare, which opened Nov. 4. Siteman Cancer Center at Memorial Hospital East, in Shiloh, Illinois, will open Jan. 13.

In recognition of its 20 years, Siteman also has a special section of its website,, dedicated to the cancer center’s past and future and to the people who make Siteman what it is today. You also can follow Siteman on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Pinterest.
