Digital Mobile Mammography Vans

Missouri Baptist Medical Center Mammography Van

Provides a two-view screening mammogram and educational information. Mammograms are read by board-certified, mammography-dedicated radiologists and reviewed again with a computer-aided detection system. A report is sent to your physician, and you receive a letter about your mammogram results. Our service is accredited by the American College of Radiology and is Medicare- and FDA-approved.

We recommend that you first contact your insurance provider to verify coverage for a screening mammogram, and to determine if written authorization from your primary care physician is required. If so, please bring this written authorization and your medical insurance card with you to your appointment.

For members of participating insurance plans and Medicare, Missouri Baptist Medical Center will file your claim for you.

For more information, call 314.996.5170 or toll-free 800.870.5731

Siteman Cancer Center Mammography Van

The van is equipped with digital technology and is accredited by the Food and Drug Administration. It appears at Schnucks stores, area corporations, community sites, and clinics.

Most insurance plans and Medicare cover this screening once a year; the fee can be directly billed to the insurance company or Medicare. Women with limited insurance or no insurance should call 314.454.8466 to see if they qualify for a mammogram at no cost.

Bone Density for Women

We often think about osteoporosis as a disease that only women need to worry about. But men can be affected too. Osteoporosis is characterized by weak, brittle and porous bones. It's the leading cause of hip fractures, a disabling problem that affects many seniors.

The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons reports 10 million Americans already have osteoporosis and 18 million more have low bone mass, which places them at an increased risk for developing osteoporosis. Eighty percent of those affected by osteoporosis — 8 million Americans — are women. One in two women and one in eight men over 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. Another 34 million Americans are at risk for osteopenia, or low bone mass, which can lead to fractures and other complications.

Our spines are another part of the body that is seriously at risk. Osteoporosis causes 700,000 fractures of the vertebrae each year.

For many people, osteoporosis is preventable, treatable and in some cases, can even be reversed. Proper diet, calcium supplements, exercise and avoiding substances that interfere with the body's ability to absorb calcium, such as caffeine and nicotine, can help build up the skeleton's store of calcium in younger years and can slow the loss of calcium after menopause.

Flexibility and Grip Strength

Flexibility
As we age, muscles tighten and joint range of motion can diminish. This can slow energetic lifestyles and hinder day-to-day activities. A regular stretching program can help lengthen muscles and restore vigor.

Grip Strength
The grip strength test measures the muscular strength of the upper extremities. There is a strong correlation between grip strength and overall upper body strength. Strength training is an important component of a physical fitness program. It helps muscles become stronger and improve tone, appearance and endurance. This helps increase energy, avoid injury, perform daily activities and improve athletic performance.
