Is it safe to give a 6 month old zzzQuil to help her sleep when she cranky?

Short answer: NO.

Vicks zzzQuil (diphenhydramine) uses the side effects of an antihistamine to make someone drowsy. The FDA recommends that OTC cough and cold products not be used for sedation in children of any age.

A Public Health Advisory was issued in January 2008 stating that the FDA strongly recommends that over-the-counter (OTC) cough and cold products should not be used for infants and children under 2 years of age because serious and potentially life-threatening side effects could occur. Further, the FDA recommends that you do not use these products to sedate children of any age.
