I learned to make mashed potatoes from my Mom, using milk and lots of butter. I know that's not the healthiest way, so what else can I do?

Move over butter and cream. It's time to infuse one of America's favorite dishes with some inspiration!

Next time, try adding some of these combinations to really wake up your potatoes: fresh chives and smoked cheddar cheese, fresh basil and Parmesan cheese, roasted garlic and buttermilk, horseradish, sour cream and fresh dill, red chili olive oil, and — one of my favorites — Wasabi mashed potatoes, made with that wonderful Japanese spicy horseradish.

Also try using some different types of potatoes like Yukon gold or baby bliss. Wait … did someone say mashed Peruvian purple potatoes? Now you're talking!
