How can I avoid cravings this time of year? I exercise as much as my schedule allows. I avoid fried or greasy foods, but I constantly crave salty foods, and cookies and cakes. How can I indulge without wrecking my diet? I am trying to lose 60+ pounds.

The holidays are a tough time of year for losing weight. It's often said that you shouldn't try to lose weight over the holidays, just work on maintaining your current weight.

Exercise does help with cravings and keeping the extra pounds off. Also, giving in to your cravings may not be a bad thing, if you do it with care. Have what you are craving, just a smaller portion. For example, instead taking a bag of chips into the living room, place 17 or so (a serving size) into a small bowl and then go to the living room.

Also, designate just one place to eat, such as the kitchen table — not in the car or at the sink. Choose low-fat salty snacks, low-fat desserts (3 grams of fat or less per serving). Don't skip meals. Eating regular meals and snacks can help with cravings.
