Does taking metformin have any contradiction with eating sugar?

There is not a direct drug interaction between Metformin and sugar, if that is what you mean. However, Metformin is taken to lower blood sugar by decreasing the output of sugar released from the liver and by improving our sensitivity to insulin. Insulin is the hormone that helps sugar from the blood get into our cells where it is used for energy.

When you eat foods containing sugar, the sugar in the blood will usually rise faster and higher than if you eat a balanced meal of protein, carbohydrate, and fats that includes whole grains and fiber. So, eating foods that contain high amounts of sugar will make it more difficult to achieve desirable blood sugar levels while on Metformin.
