Wm. Claiborne Dunagan, MDBJC Senior Vice President & Chief Clinical Officer

Dr. Clay Dunagan leads the BJC HealthCare focus on ensuring the highest quality, safest and most effective care for patients served by BJC's hospitals and health service organizations. In this role, he works closely with physician and clinical leaders from Washington University School of Medicine, BJC Medical Group and other affiliated clinicians to accelerate sustainable improvements in patient care. 

With a strong foundation in evidence-based medicine, Dr. Dunagan directs the BJC Center for Clinical Excellence, which is responsible for supporting the members of BJC HealthCare in measuring and enhancing the quality of care. The Center comprises a diverse group of health care professionals, including epidemiologists, analysts, computer programmers, industrial engineers and quality consultants.

Dr. Dunagan has been heading up health care quality efforts at BJC HealthCare since 1994.  He also is a professor of medicine at Washington University School of Medicine, where he holds appointments in the Divisions of Infectious Diseases and General Medical Sciences in the Department of Medicine.  Dr. Dunagan is board-certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases and maintains clinical appointments in both at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

Dr. Dunagan earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering science and a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.  He received his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Barnes Hospital and an infectious disease fellowship at Washington University. He served as chief resident of internal medicine for Barnes Hospital before joining the Washington University School of Medicine faculty.

Dr. Dunagan also completed post-graduate training in health care epidemiology, quality and outcomes assessment, and quality improvement.

In addition to his corporate and clinical care responsibilities, Dr. Dunagan actively participates in health services research with an emphasis on health care epidemiology, quality improvement, and the use of information technology to enhance patient care.  He also lectures to medical students, physicians and executives on infectious diseases, clinical epidemiology and biostatistics, and quality improvement.

Dr. Dunagan has spoken at numerous national meetings on quality assessment and improvement and has co-authored many publications in infectious diseases, epidemiology and quality improvement.  He represents BJC at the National Quality Forum and is a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the Society of Health Care Epidemiologists of America, and the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.

A native of West Texas, Dr. Dunagan and his wife have four children.
