Project Overview

The Campus Renewal Project is a long-term project to transform Washington University Medical Center (WUMC) through new construction and renovations. The campus is vast and includes Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. Campus Renewal encompasses the three institutions with an overall focus on improving the patient and family experience from both a clinical and campus perspective.

We continually evaluate our facilities to ensure that buildings and clinical spaces function effectively, efficiently and safely, enabling clinicians and caregivers to provide the best possible care.

Being responsive to rising health care costs nationally and predicted demands for increased health care services in the future, we also strive for efficiency while ensuring that we can accommodate that increased demand.

The planning for renovation and new construction with the Campus Renewal Project is a long-term vision to renew the medical center campus on Kingshighway Boulevard encompassing BJC’s Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital along with Washington University School of Medicine.

Through renovations and new construction, we will create an environment and experience for patients and their families that matches the excellence in medical care they expect. Additional private inpatient rooms are a key component of the overall project.

Barnes-Jewish Hospital – a new inpatient tower will consolidate obstetrics and gynecological services, expand clinical care at the Siteman Cancer Center, expand other surgical programs and create new space for faculty practice clinics and diagnostics.

St. Louis Children's Hospital – new construction will substantially increase the number of private beds and expand diagnostics and treatments services, outpatient clinics and support services. 

Barnes-Jewish Hospital – a new inpatient tower will enable the expansion of the heart and vascular; neurology and neurosurgery; transplant; trauma and critical care; and general medicine programs.

The arrival, departure and experience while visiting our campus are important aspects of our project.  Our public and open spaces affect the well-being of our patients and families as well. We plan to improve the clarity, function and aesthetic qualities of the campus; provide clear pedestrian pathways; add parking spaces; improved arrival and departure; and relocate service traffic.
