David R. Aplington
BJC Senior Vice President and General Counsel
As senior vice president and general counsel for BJC HealthCare, Dave Aplington is responsible for the provision of legal services throughout BJC’s hospitals and service organizations. He also oversees risk management, corporate compliance and audit services.
His responsibilities include regulatory issues; acquisitions, joint ventures and other transactions; physician relationships, including Stark and anti-kickback issues; tax-exemption and community benefit issues; tax-exempt financing; corporate governance and general corporate issues; legal advice for treasury and investments; labor and employment; Medicare reimbursement; and managed-care issues. He also provides antitrust advice and counseling for acquisitions and managed care negotiations.
He is the primary attorney responsible for the Academic Affiliation agreement and all supporting agreements between BJC and Washington University School of Medicine. He drafted the lease agreement for Boone Hospital Center in 2006 and 2011. Recently, Aplington handled the legal structuring and organization of the BJC Collaborative.
Aplington joined BJC HealthCare in 1996 as associate general counsel and was promoted to vice president and deputy general counsel in 2003. He previously was a partner with Thompson Coburn in St. Louis until 1993 and served as general counsel for a Philadelphia-based insurance company until 1996. Aplington has worked closely with the legal staff of the American Hospital Association on several matters of interest to the hospital industry. He holds a bachelor of science degree in finance from the University of Illinois and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Illinois College of Law.
A native of Peoria, Illinois, Aplington and his wife live in Clayton and have three adult children and two grandchildren.
