Melatonin (a Hormone That Promotes Sleep) Questions and Drug Interactions
CAUTION: Take melatonin only as needed at bedtime when you can devote at least eight hours to sleep. It can cause drowsiness. Make sure all your health care providers have a complete list of your medications, including over-the-counter medications, herbals and vitamins.
Can I take Melatonin (an endocrine-metabolic agent and pineal gland hormone that promotes sleep and is normally used to treat "jet lag" or minor sleep disturbances) with:
| Ampicillin? |
Yes. Take the ampicillin until the prescription is finished. |
| Arbs? |
If you mean Angiotensin II Receptor Antagonist or Angiotensin Receptor Blockers, there is a potential for additional drowsiness or fatigue. These drugs are indicated for diabetic nephropathy, hypertension, congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction or in patients who are intolerant of ACE inhibitors. I could not find a specific drug interaction between melatonin and the arbs. |
| Aspirin? |
Yes. |
| Aspirin and NyQuil Nightime? |
Yes. If you are taking aspirin for your heart, take that with breakfast. NyQuil has quite a bit of alcohol and an antihistamine. This will make you drowsy. |
| Cyclobenzaprine? |
Yes. Both drugs can make you drowsy. Be careful getting out of bed. |
| Flagyl? |
Yes. Take Flagyl with food, and finish the course of therapy. Do not drink alcohol while taking Flagyl. |
| Fluoxetine? |
Yes. Take fluoxetine in the morning. You may experience a slight increase in drowsiness, so do not drive or operate machinery until you see if there are any effects on you. |
| Insulin? |
Yes. |
| Levothyroxine? |
Yes. You may take them together if needed. Take levothyroxine early in the morning. |
| Lexapro? |
Yes. Normally melatonin is given at bedtime and Lexapro in the morning. |
| Librax? |
Librax is a GI tranquilizer. Librax (clidinium and chlordiazepoxide) and melatonin can cause drowsiness, so taking the two together can increase drowsiness. |
| Metformin? |
Yes. Metformin (glucophage) is a biguanide drug used as a hypoglycemic agent for diabetes. Melatonin should only be used as needed, not continuously. |
| Nerautin? |
Yes. |
Phenergan liquid?
|
Yes. Phenergan (promethazine) is an antinausea drug with antihistamine properties that cause drowsiness. Taking these together can increase drowsiness. |
| Plaquenil? |
Yes. Take Plaquenil with food and when instructed by your doctor. Take melatonin only as needed. |
| Tegaserod? |
Yes. |
| Tramadol (Ultram)? |
Yes. Both can cause drowsiness, so taking the two together can increase drowsiness. Take these only as needed. |
| Warfarin? |
There is an interaction between warfarin and melatonin. Concurrent use of melatonin and warfarin may result in an increased risk of bleeding. If you have been taking melatonin all along, contact your physician and get advice. I would avoid most, if not all, herbal products while taking warfarin (Coumadin). See our Herbal Supplement Quiz. |
| Zoloft (Sertraline)? |
Yes. Taken together, the mental impairment or drowsiness side effects could increase. Take Zoloft daily in the morning and melatonin as needed at bedtime. |
