Anchoring the Regional Safety Net -- $25 million
In a community that has no public hospital system, BJC plays a large role in
ensuring the health care safety net in the region through direct services and by
working with other community organizations to fill gaps in the network. The most visible support from BJC is apparent in hospital
emergency department visits. But BJC also works behind the scenes in partnership
with city, county and state governments, other health care providers and the
business community to make substantial investments that improve access to health
care in the community.

Subsidized Services -- $21.1 million
James Musgrave remembers going to bed the night of April 25 with plans to
report, as usual, the following morning to his Metro East employer. The next
thing he can recall is waking up in the trauma intensive care unit at
Barnes-Jewish Hospital four days later. A work-related electrical accident left
him with severe electrical burns and no memory of the intervening days.

Emergency Response Planning -- $1.3 million

When severe thunderstorms struck the St. Louis region, thousands of
businesses, residences, hospitals and long-term care facilities lost power.
While hospitals functioned on generators, emergency plans at long-term care
facilities called for the evacuation of residents to hospitals -- with no prior
planning, transportation arrangements or contingencies.

Donations -- $2.9 million
Every June, downtown St. Louis is engulfed in a sea of pink as the annual
Komen Race for the Cure sweeps into town. With 65,285 participants, the 2007
Race set new attendance records and raised more than $2.5 million for breast
cancer research. The Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and
Washington University School of Medicine served as a platinum sponsor and its nearly 3,100
participants raised $67,650. Missouri Baptist Medical Center also supported the
Race as a silver-level sponsor, and employees from across BJC raced or walked to
support the cause.
