Where Learning and Innovation Come Together for Better Health and Better Health Care for Our Community What does a hospital mean to its community? First and foremost, it’s the place to turn in a time of need when someone is sick or injured. Throughout their existence, hospitals have been counted on to provide medical care regardless of a patient’s ability to pay -- an expectation and obligation that remains today. The concept of health care has evolved through the ages, though, beyond simply “fixing” medical problems to helping individuals better understand and manage their own health. With it, the concept of a health care organization’s obligation to the community has expanded beyond basic charity care to encompass community benefit in many shapes and forms, including education, early intervention, prevention and active involvement in their communities. BJC HealthCare and its member hospitals and health service organizations provided a total of almost $300 million during 2007 in free medical care, health professionals education, medical research and community health initiatives like interpreter services, mammography screenings for low-income women, health screenings in underserved communities and teen smoking cessation programs in area schools, to name but a few.
