Christian Hospital Tackles Diabetes

In an effort to combat the spread of diabetes and create greater awareness of this life-changing disease, the Christian Hospital Diabetes Institute is dedicated to providing screenings and education to the community.

Diabetes is the sixth-leading cause of death by disease in the United States. It affects 20 million people, and more than 6 million people don’t even know they have it. Left untreated, diabetes can lead to serious problems like heart and kidney disease, amputations or blindness.

The Christian Hospital Diabetes Institute provided more than 5,000 free diabetes screenings in 2007, and also helps with diabetes education and management. The Diabetes Busters mobile unit provides free screenings in the community as part of the Christian Hospital Diabetes Institute’s neighborhood outreach program.

Specially trained physicians, clinicians and dietitians are affiliated with the Christian Hospital Diabetes Institute to help the community learn to control diabetes by eating healthy, exercising and taking medications the right way. They work with the patient’s primary care physician to create an individualized plan.

The Christian Hospital Diabetes Institute also provides outpatient services and inpatient services at Christian Hospital to enable specially trained physicians and nurses to address the needs of diabetes patients.

Some of the signs of diabetes include frequent urination, dramatic weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, slow-healing wounds, or tingling in the toes or feet.
