Glossary

Common terms for services and interventions are described in this section. They identify a wide array of services that may be bundled for a client at any level or site of care. It is important that the treatment process begin with a thorough assessment of the client's needs and strengths. Services that best address the patient's needs and strengths and are within the client's benefit coverage may then be authorized. When a service, which is not a covered benefit, is identified as appropriate for effective treatment of the client, the provider should refer the client to such a service in the community.

Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS)
A scale used to systematically assess and record involuntary movements on a scale of 1 to 4 according to severity of symptoms

Assertive Community Treatment
A community support program in which an interdisciplinary team of mental health professionals provides all services; this treatment incorporates mobility, assertiveness and continuity

Brief Psychotherapy
Any form of psychotherapy whose end point is defined either in terms of the number of sessions (generally not more than 15) or in terms of specified objectives; usually goal-oriented, circumscribed, active, focused, and directed toward a specific problem or symptom

Community Psychiatric Rehabilitation
A Medicaid-funded program licensed by the Missouri Department of Mental Health designed to provide a range of essential community-based mental health services that maximize independent functioning and promote the recovery and self-determination process

Community Support System (CSS)
A network of caring and responsible people committed to helping a vulnerable population meet their needs and develop their potential without being unnecessarily isolated or excluded from the community

Couples Therapy
Counseling directed at the needs and strengths of a relationship between partners

Clinical Case Management
Therapeutic and environmental interventions specific to the needs and resources of clients and their communities

Crisis Services
A wide array of emergency services -- offered to individuals/families to provide safe containment and determine and most appropriate, least restrictive LOC -- provided in various setting, including emergency rooms, respite centers, therapeutic nurseries and the home

Culturally Competent Services
The delivery of services that is responsive to cultural concerns of racial and ethnic minority groups including their language, histories, traditions, beliefs and values

Detoxification
The process of withdrawing a person from a specific psychoactive substance in a safe and effective manner -- may be provided in various levels/sites of care, under medical supervision

Discharge Planning
The formal process for determining, prior to discharge from a facility, the coordination and management of the care that a member is to receive following discharge

Drop-In Centers
Non-professionally supervised community support settings for clients in need of social contact or support

ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy)
Provided at contracted hospitals under medical supervision

Educational Services
Services provided within the context of behavioral health treatment designed for prevention of problems and development of skills

Emergency Medical Condition
The sudden and -- at the time -- unexpected onset of a health condition that manifests itself by symptoms of sufficient severity that would lead a prudent lay person (processing an average knowledge of medicine and health) to believe that immediate medical care is required which may include, but not be limited to:

  • Placing the person's health in significant jeopardy
  • Serious impairment to a bodily function
  • Serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part
  • Inadequately controlled pain
  • With respect to a pregnant woman who is having contractions
    • That there is inadequate time to effect a safe transfer to another hospital before delivery
    • That transfer to another hospital may pose a threat to the health or safety of the woman or unborn child

Emergency Services
A health-care item or service furnished or required to screen and stabilize an emergency medical condition, which may include -- but shall not be limited to -- health-care services provided in a licensed hospital's emergency facility by an appropriate provider

Family Therapy
Psychotherapeutic service provided to a family with a focus on family dynamics and strategic interventions

Forensic Client
A person who has been found unable to proceed with trial or not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect in a court of law and committed to the Department of Mental Health for treatment as defined in Missouri Revised Statutes, Chapter 552

Group Psychotherapy
Psychotherapeutic service provided to a group of clients, offering the benefits of interpersonal interaction

Home Visit/Home Health
Services provided in the client's home with the goal of maintaining the client at the least restrictive LOC

Housing Specialist Services
Assistance provided to a care manager or treatment team in the identification of appropriate housing for clients

Independent Living Supports
Assistance provided to a client in learning or carrying out activities of daily living

Individualized Treatment Rehabilitation Plan (ITRP)
A plan that includes a description of treatment objectives, outcome statements and criteria for discharge

Initial Evaluation
The assessment completed during the first in-person contact with the client

Inpatient Consult
Consultation by a psychiatrist or other behavioral health professional provided to the attending physician of a hospitalized medical or surgical client

Intensive Case Management
Home/community-based service in which intensive support of treatment is provided to attain or maintain the client's stability

Laboratory Services
Behavioral health related laboratory services ordered by the psychiatric or medical provider as part of the authorized assessment or treatment

Levels of Service/Levels of Care
Clinical criteria that define different levels of service or levels of care within a service; levels of service/levels of care criteria include admission criteria, exclusion criteria, continuing stay criteria and discharge criteria for each level of service or care

Linkage/Referral/Advocacy
Case management service -- sometimes grant-funded -- designed to assist the client with access to necessary community services, some of which may not be behavioral health services

Long-Term Inpatient
Psychiatric hospitalization lasting for more than 30 days, generally provided in public psychiatric facilities, and appropriate only for individuals whose severity of illness is so extreme or intractable that alternatives to hospitalization are not feasible

Mandated Evaluations
Comprehensive assessments by certified or licensed professionals who are qualified by experience or training to conduct such assessments, which include protocol administration, interpretation and report of findings; and are provided pursuant to orders of a court, government agency, or some related entity with responsibility and authority for ordering client evaluations

Maintenance Drug Therapy
Continuing a therapeutic drug after it has reached its maximum efficacy and at a minimum effective level to prevent an early relapse or a later recurrence

Mobile Emergency/Crisis Response Team
Stabilization services -- provided by behavioral health professionals -- that are designed to access and, if appropriate, treat individuals who are experiencing emergent mental health or substance use problems; the intervention can be provided in any setting consistent with good patient care and safety for the individual and the community

Medication Administration
This intervention is included in Pharmacologic/Medication Management

Off-Site/Mobile Diagnostic Screening
Evaluation services provided in settings other than an office; may be conducted by a clinician on a mobile team

Pharmacologic/Medication Management -- Can Include Injection, Prescription, Monitoring, Support, Methadone/Clozapine Management
Services related to the treatment of behavioral health disorders, using approved pharmacologic agents -- administered, prescribed or provided by a licensed professional who meets BJC Behavioral Health and Behavioral Health Partners credentialing standards; interventions include prescription, direct or supervised administration of medication, monitoring of biological and behavioral effects, dosage adjustment, and patient education

Physician Services
Medical services provided by a licensed physician other than a psychiatrist, when such services are part of the client's treatment plan and are directly related to the treatment of a mental health or substance use disorder; the physician must meet BJC Behavioral Health and Behavioral Health Partners credentialing standards

Psychosocial Rehabilitation
Services to maximize the ability of clients with serious and persistent forms of mental-health and substance-use disorders to function within the mainstream of community life through teaching or reinforcing skills for daily living, work, mobility and the maintenance of supportive social relationships; programs generally are offered in conjunction with other clinical interventions that are designed to contain, mitigate or manage symptoms of persistent and severe behavioral health disorders

Psychological Testing
Formal assessment and evaluation of patients -- performed by licensed practitioners -- using accepted tests, measures and protocols; includes test administration, scoring, interpretation of results, and the reporting of findings and recommendations

Recovery
The development of new meaning and purpose in one's life as one grows beyond the catastrophic effects of mental illness

Respite Care
Planned, short-term placement for a high-risk client who is otherwise maintained at home; also, planned relief for the caregiver to sustain placement, or to provide special education and training

Substance Use Detoxification
See Detoxification

Support Groups
Self-help or professionally run groups to provide ongoing support for an individual, often run under the auspices of a treatment program, or through a recognized consumer or family association; may be an ancillary part of treatment; may be funded under waiver or special non-Medicaid state funds

Supported Employment
Services provided as part of a psychiatric rehabilitation or offered through a psychosocial club; continuing day treatment programs may provide pre-employment support programs

System of Care for Children with Mental Health Neeeds
Services and support in a coordinated network; integrates care planning and management across multiple levels; is culturally and linguistically competent; and builds meaningful partnerships with families and youth at service delivery, management, and policy levels

Treatment Family Home
Private family residence, licensed by the Missouri Department of Mental Health, to provide out-of-home care for up to three youth; families that have children placed in their homes get specialized training to work with these children

23-Hour Holding Bed/23-Hour Observation
Extended evaluation lasting less than 24 hours, which includes active treatment and one psychiatric contact at a site of care consistent with BJC Behavioral Health and Behavioral Health Partners inpatient service components

Wraparound Services
Services provided by qualified staff -- pursuant to a comprehensive plan of treatment -- that are focused on maintaining the viability of the client's primary family unit; interventions can include counseling, education, training and any related activities that strengthen the family unit and increase its functional capacity
