Every day, millions of Americans rely on medications to feel better and get well. But sometimes medications can interact with other substances – and have dangerous results.

BJC HealthCare hospitals encourage you to keep track of your medications and discuss them with your doctor regularly. You may find it helpful to write down everything that you’re taking, including strength, dose and frequency. Don’t forget to include herbal supplements, nutritional supplements, vitamins and over-the-counter medications. These seemingly harmless items can interact dangerously with certain medications. Certain foods and alcohol also can cause harmful reactions. Make sure your doctor knows what you’re taking before ordering a new medication, and always read the label carefully.

While you’re in the hospital, the physicians, nurses and pharmacists

of BJC HealthCare affiliated hospitals use sophisticated processes and technology to ensure that you get the right medicine, in the right dose, at the right time.

Be sure to ask your doctor, pharmacist or other health professional these questions when you are ready to return home with new medications:

  • What is the name of my medication and what is it used for?
  • Am I receiving a brand name or generic medication?
  • When do I take my medication and for how long?
  • Should I avoid any food, drinks, activities or other medications while I am taking this medication?
  • What side effects should I be aware of and what do I do if I experience them?
  • Is this a safe medication to take with the other medications that I am currently taking?
  • Do you have any written information available on this medication?
