Overview

BJC HealthCare is one of the largest nonprofit health care organizations in the United States, focused on delivering services to residents primarily in the greater St. Louis, southern Illinois and mid-Missouri regions. With 2008 net revenue of $3.2 billion, BJC serves the health care needs of urban, suburban and rural communities and includes 13 hospitals and multiple community health locations. Services include inpatient and outpatient care, primary care, community health and wellness, workplace health, home health, community mental health, rehabilitation, long-term care and hospice.

BJC is the largest provider of charity care, unreimbursed care and community benefits in the state of Missouri. Each year, BJC hospitals and services provided more than $165 million in charity and uncompensated care. In addition, BJC provides additional community benefits through commitments to research, emergency preparedness, regional health care safety net services, medical and nursing education, health literacy, community outreach and regional economic development.

Since 1937, Alton Memorial Hospital  has cared for countless people in Alton, Illinois, and the surrounding communities. A gift to the community from the Smith family of Alton, Alton Memorial today is a full-service acute-care Hospital, serving patients in a seven-county area. Alton Memorial offers patients a variety of inpatient and outpatient services, including surgery services, medical imaging, interventional and diagnostic heart services, physical and cardiac rehabilitation, 24-hour emergency care, ambulance services and more.

Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center is the largest hospital in Missouri and is ranked as one of the nation's top 10 hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. Barnes-Jewish Hospital's staff is composed of full-time academic faculty and community physicians of Washington University School of Medicine, supported by a house staff of residents, interns, fellows and other medical professionals. Recognizing its excellence in nursing care, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to receive Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital has proudly served St. Charles, Lincoln and Warren counties with world-class, compassionate care since 1980. Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital enjoys the familiarity and friendliness of a community hospital while benefiting from BJC's expansive network of hospitals, urgent care centers and home health services. The Hospital offers full inpatient services, including emergency, pediatric, obstetric and intensive-care physicians on staff 24 hours per day. The Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital opened on campus in 2005. The Hospital also has a Sleep and Breathing Lab, Cardiology Center, Vascular Interventional Center, and Breast Health and Women's Center.

Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital has been bringing world-class health care to west St. Louis County since 1989. More than 120 members of the Hospital's medical staff are included in the 2006  "Best Doctors in America" list. To ensure the latest amenities and technology are available to patients, the Hospital recently built a new Emergency Department, renovated patient rooms, updated operating rooms and modernized patient care areas. As part of its dedication to excellence, Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital is aligned with Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine, and is expanding the services offered at its convenient west St. Louis County location.

Boone Hospital Center has been a leader in meeting the health care needs of mid-Missourians since its founding in 1921. Boone Hospital is a regional referral center in Columbia, Missouri, that has earned a reputation for excellence in cardiovascular medicine, obstetrics, neurology, mental health services, oncology and emergency medical services. The Hospital has received Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center in recognition of its nursing excellence. Through progressive health care programs, services and technology, Boone Hospital Center continues its tradition of providing quality health care and excellent customer service. In 2006, Boone Hospital Center opened a 80,000-square-foot addition, the Center for Advanced Medicine, to house outpatient services in one location.

Christian Hospital is a full-service, acute-care medical center on 28 acres in unincorporated north St. Louis County. Six miles west of Christian Hospital is Northwest HealthCare, which offers the community 24-hour emergency care and a variety of outpatient services in a convenient setting to complement Hospital services. Christian Hospital is noted for its excellence in heart services, cardiothoracic surgery, emergency medicine, neurosurgery, cancer treatment, psychiatric services and substance abuse programs, radiology, urology, pulmonology, and radiation oncology. In 2006, Christian Hospital opened its expanded Cancer Care Center and outpatient Diabetes Institute.

Clay County Hospital is a Critical Access Hospital in Flora, Illinois. Clay County Hospital is a governmental unit owned by the County of Clay and managed by Alton Memorial Hospital. During its tenure with BJC, Clay County constructed a replacement Hospital, which opened in February 2000. Clay County offers primary care services to the 15,000 citizens of Clay County and those in the neighboring counties of Marion, Wayne, Richland and Effingham. In 2004, the Hospital added a 12,000-square-foot Medical office building to its campus. The medical office building houses a rural health clinic, specialty clinics and the Rehabilitation Services Department. A 3,500-square-foot expansion of the building opened in 2008.

Missouri Baptist Medical Center is an acute-care Hospital in west St. Louis County and is ranked among top Missouri hospitals for cardiac surgery and cardiac care. Designated by the National Cancer Institute as one of 63 Community Clinical Oncology programs nationwide, Missouri Baptist Medical Center offers a full continuum of medical and surgical services. Its new 150,000-square-foot East Pavilion houses a 24-hour Emergency Department, Cancer Center, cardiovascular care and St. Louis Children's Hospital ER. The Hospital was recognized with the 2007 VHS Leadership Award for Clinical Excellence for exceeding national performance standards for clinical care in specific areas.

Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital is an acute-care Hospital committed to providing quality health care services to residents in Crawford, Franklin and Washington counties. Parkland Health Center, with locations in Bonne Terre and Farmington, Missouri, provides quality primary care, full inpatient and outpatient services, and 24-hour, physician-staffed emergency services to the people of St. Francois County. Services in Farmington include a diabetes and wound care clinic, the Huckstep Heart and Lung Center, outpatient oncology services, and an Infusion Center. The Bonne Terre location is a primary care facility with medical offices and emergency services.

Progress West HealthCare Center, the first newly built hospital in the St. Louis region in two decades, opened in February 2007 in one of the fastest growing areas of St. Charles County.  Progress West has incorporated the latest innovations in hospital design, clinical practices and technology to support its mission of delivering patient-centered care.  The 72-bed hospital offers 24-hour emergency care, medical/surgical inpatient care, outpatient surgery, full imaging and diagnostic services, obstetrics, physician offices, and all private patient rooms. Through a partnership with St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Progress West also provides pediatric care.

Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis provides a full range of acute inpatient, outpatient and community rehabilitation services for patients with stroke, brain and spinal cord injuries, cancer, and neurologic and orthopedic conditions. The state-of-the-art facility opened in March 2001, and is a joint partnership between BJC HealthCare and HEALTHSOUTH Corporation. The Hospital and its medical staff also conduct major rehabilitative research and education programs through an affiliation with Washington University School of Medicine.

BJC Behavioral Health delivers and coordinates an array of customized, high-quality behavioral health care services for children, adults and families, including community-based short-term or long-term services, either on-site or with treatment providers in the community. BJC Behavioral Health also offers local and regional employers a full-service Employee Assistance Program that is convenient, affordable and totally confidential.

BJC Community Health Literacy Services offers outreach programs to children and adults to help them understand the key determinants of good health. At health events throughout the region, BJC Community Health Literacy Services health education programs, screenings for certain diseases, and weight management and smoking cessation seminars.  BJC School Outreach and Youth Development is one of the most extensive programs in the region, providing services to public, private and parochial school districts in Missouri and Illinois. Course offerings focus on health issues and behaviors such as drug use, alcohol use and tobacco use; nutrition and fitness; sexually transmitted diseases; safety; stress management; and violence prevention.  OASIS is a national nonprofit educational organization for adults 50 and better that offers challenging lifelong learning, health improvement and civic engagement opportunities. Free membership includes a variety of discounts and benefits. OASIS also offers HealthStages, a health promotion programs that helps older adults identify health risks and make healthy behavior changes.

BJC Corporate Health Services offers a comprehensive continuum of occupational health services to St. Louis area employers. Whether it is caring for an injured worker at a BarnesCare clinic, providing access to an extensive network of trained physician specialists or helping companies maximize productivity through the WellAware program, the BJC Corporate Health Services team partners with its client companies to address all their occupational health needs.

BJC Home Care Services offers patients and their families a complete range of services, including skilled nursing, rehabilitation therapy, adult and pediatric hospice and supportive care, home medical equipment and high-tech respiratory care. Infusion services can be offered either in the home or in infusion treatment rooms. Specialty disease management programs also are available. BJC Home Care is a provider of HomMed, a health monitoring system that measures and collects patients' daily vital signs and weight, and notifies both a nurse and the patient of changes that signal the need for follow-up care. Serving more than 25 counties in Missouri and Illinois, BJC Home Care Services is the largest home-care network in the region and one of the largest in the country.

BJC Medical Group employs 125 physicians who serve patients with a range of needs, including primary care, gastroenterology, rheumatology, oncology, pulmonology, endocrinology, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, general surgery, and neurology. BJC Medical Group supports physician practices associated with BJC HealthCare hospitals and helps recruit physicians to growing markets. BJC Medical Group also offers practice management services to non-employed physicians through a service called PhyFocus.
