Steven H. Lipstein, BJC President and Chief Executive Officer
Lipstein joined BJC in October 1999. Previously, he served as executive vice president at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System and president and chief operating officer of the University of Chicago Hospitals. From 1982 to 1994, Lipstein held executive positions within The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System in Baltimore, finishing his tenure as the hospital's vice president for administration.
Lipstein serves on the Boards of Washington University in St. Louis and the Missouri Hospital Association. In addition, he serves as treasurer of the St. Louis Regional Health Commission and is a member of the Board of the St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association. Nationally, he is a member of the Board of Directors for the American Association of Medical Colleges, serving as chair of the Council of Teaching Hospitals and chair of the Medicare/Medicaid Special Action Committee. Lipstein was appointed chair of the Eighth District Federal Reserve Bank effective January 2009.
Kevin Roberts, BJC Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Roberts has responsibility for finance, treasury and managed care. Roberts joined BJC in June 2008 from University Hospitals Health System, Cleveland, Ohio, where he served as senior vice president and chief financial officer since 2001, responsible for finance, information technology, managed care, treasury, and insurance and corporate risk management. During his tenure at University Hospitals, the system achieved a multiyear financial turnaround that improved profitability by $250 million; the development of a new delivery and application model for information technology; and the restructuring and broad diversification of investment assets, resulting in substantially improved investment returns.
Prior to joining the leadership team of University Hospitals, Roberts was treasurer of The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, an 11-hospital integrated health system. He began his career with the public accounting firm of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Company.
Michael A. DeHaven, BJC Senior Vice President and General Counsel
DeHaven is responsible for the provision of legal services, risk management, corporate compliance, audit services, philanthropy, government relations and corporate communications throughout BJC's affiliated hospitals and service organizations.
DeHaven is a member of the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, American Health Lawyers Association, Missouri Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He is active in the St. Louis community and is a member of Webster University Board of Trustees, the Children's Miracle Network of Greater St. Louis Board of Directors, the Board of Directors of Saint Louis ConnectCare, and the Board of Directors of Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club. He also serves on the Board of the Medical Liability Alliance and the Advisory Board of FM Global Insurance Company.
Carlos Perea, BJC Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer

Perea has responsibility for all aspects of human resources. He previously was vice president, human resources, with BellSouth. His human resources roles have included recruitment, labor relations, and organization and staffing; and he has a successful track record in change management, the ability to position human resources as a strategic business partner. Perea holds Six Sigma Black Belt certification and GE CAP certification (GE's Change Acceleration Program), and he earned his bachelor of science degree from Temple University in Philadelphia.
David A. Weiss, BJC Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer
Weiss is responsible for planning, developing and supporting information technology and telecommunications initiatives throughout BJC's affiliated hospitals and service organizations, overseeing a $117 million budget and a staff of 600 professionals who specialize in clinical-based software solutions, integration of disparate systems and expert systems to support caregivers in clinical practices. He also is chairman of the Telecommunication Facilities Corporation, a joint venture between BJC HealthCare and Washington University School of Medicine, providing all voice communication services to Washington University Medical Center.
Weiss is a member of numerous professional organizations including the Health Care Information Systems Executives Association (past Chairman), the American Medical Informatics Association and the Health Care Information and Management Systems Society. He is a member of the College of Health Care Information Management Executives and serves as a lecturer in the Health Administration Program of Washington University School of Medicine.
Andrew Ziskind, MD, BJC Senior Vice President
After a four year tenure as Barnes-Jewish Hospital president, Ziskind moves to a newly created full-time role with BJC HealthCare to lead and coordinate our system-wide preparations for health care reform.
Dr. Ziskind is widely published and is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American College of Physicians and American Heart Association Council on Clinical Cardiology, as well as a number of other professional organizations.
Robert W. Cannon, BJC Group President

Cannon is responsible for capital planning and budgeting, the design and construction of facility expansion, and renovation projects for BJC's hospitals and service organizations. He oversees corporate services in the areas of real estate operations and clinical engineering.
Cannon is involved in local community development and real estate organizations. He is a Board member of the Washington University Medical Center Redevelopment Corporation and St. Louis Land Company, LLC. He is active in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Sandra A. Van Trease, BJC Group President
Van Trease provides strategic leadership and direction to a select group of BJC's affiliated community and rural hospitals: Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, Boone Hospital Center, Christian Hospital, Northwest HealthCare, Missouri Baptist Medical Center, Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital, Parkland Health Center and Progress West HealthCare Center in Missouri; and Alton Memorial Hospital and Clay County Hospital in Illinois. She is responsible for overall business and growth strategies for these hospitals and BJC Medical Group to ensure outstanding clinical quality, operating efficiencies and financial stability.
Van Trease is an active member of the St. Louis community and serves on civic and corporate boards, including Peabody Energy, Enterprise Financial Services Corporation, St. Louis Regional Business Council, Saint Louis Symphony, Women Business Leaders of the U.S. Health Care Industry Foundation and the St. Louis Police Foundation.
W. Claiborne Dunagan, MD, BJC Vice President, Center for Health Care Quality and Effectiveness
Dr. Dunagan provides leadership for the organization on quality assessment and improvement since 1994. He is a professor of medicine at Washington University School of Medicine, where he holds appointments in the Divisions of Infectious Diseases and General Medical Sciences in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Dunagan is board-certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases, and maintains clinical appointments in both at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
Dr. Dunagan represents BJC at the National Quality Forum; and is a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the Society of Health Care Epidemiologists of America, and the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.
Ronald G. Evens, MD, BJC Senior Executive Officer
As a BJC senior executive officer for special projects, Dr. Evens serves on the Barnes-Jewish College of Nursing Board and evaluates technology programs.
Before his retirement in 2005, Dr. Evens served as president of Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the flagship adult teaching hospital affiliated with BJC HealthCare. It is consistently ranked among the nation's best hospitals and is affiliated with internationally renowned Washington University School of Medicine.
June McAllister Fowler, BJC Vice President, Corporate and Public Communications
Fowler leads internal, external and public policy communications and community relations efforts. She has responsibility for media relations, executive communications, community affairs, creative services, web development, media services and the award-winning employee newspaper, BJC Today.
Fowler has been an active volunteer throughout the region for many years. She currently serves as vice president of FOCUS St. Louis and is a board member of the St. Louis Science Center, Missouri Historical Society, Forest Park Forever and Associated Industries of Missouri. She also serves as a member of UMB Bank's St. Louis Advisory Board. Fowler is immediate past chair of both the Girl Scout Council of Greater St. Louis and the Metropolitan Association for Philanthropy.
JoAnn M. Shaw, BJC Vice President and Chief Learning Officer
Shaw oversees BJC's adult learning initiatives, including the BJC Center for Lifelong Learning, and partnerships with local colleges and universities. Shaw joined BJC in 2001 as vice president and chief human resources officer, and established the BJC Center for Lifelong Learning to open new career paths for employees through training and development opportunities.
Shaw has served as chairperson of the American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration's Legislative and Labor Committee, and on the ASHRRA Board of Directors as president in 2000 and immediate past president in 2001. She has served on the Society for Human Resource Management Employee Relations Committee, and on the Board of Directors of American Hospital Association-Insurance Resources Inc. Shaw served on the St. Louis chapter Boards of Junior Achievement as Chairwoman of the Board, March of Dimes, the Workforce Investment Board and OASIS, and on the national board for the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning. She has served on both the national and St. Louis chapter Boards of Directors for the Alzheimer's Association.
Richard Liekweg, BJC Group President

Liekweg oversees the operation of the flagship adult teaching hospital affiliated with BJC HealthCare. Barnes-Jewish Hospital is consistently ranked among the nation's best hospitals and is affiliated with internationally renowned Washington University School of Medicine.
He comes to St. Louis after six years as chief executive officer and associate vice chancellor for the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Medical Center. In this position, Liekweg was responsible for overall management of the university’s 549-bed academic medical center including two adult hospitals, child & adolescent psychiatric services, a regional burn center, a comprehensive solid organ transplant program, an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center, the Shiley Eye Center and a Level 1 Trauma Center.
Lee F. Fetter, BJC Group President
President, St. Louis Children's Hospital
As president of St. Louis Children's Hospital and senior executive officer of BJC HealthCare, Fetter leads one of the premier pediatric hospitals in the United States, serving children from around the world. As the pediatric teaching hospital for Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis Children's Hospital offers nationally recognized programs for physician training and research. As BJC group president, Fetter has responsibilities for the organization's clinical quality and patient safety initiatives coordinated by the Center for Healthcare Quality and Effectiveness, and employee education and training programs offered through the Learning Institute.
Fetter is active in the St. Louis community through involvement in numerous Boards of Directors and school boards, and in several professional organizations, including the Children's Health Care Corporation of America and the National Association for Children's Hospitals and Related Organizations, where he served as chairman of the Council for Child Advocacy. He also serves on the Boards of the Children's Discovery Institute, a joint venture of St. Louis Children's Hospital and Washington University; the Parents as Teachers National Center; the St. Louis Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation; and Mid-America Transplant Services.
Dave Braasch, President, Alton Memorial Hospital
As president of Alton Memorial Hospital, Braasch directs the operation of a 222-bed full-service acute-care hospital that serves patients in a five-county area. In addition to the Hospital, Braasch has responsibility for the affiliated 64-bed long-term care facility, Eunice Smith Home on the Alton Memorial campus. He was named Hospital president in 2007.
Braasch has played an instrumental role in Alton Memorial’s growth, having joined the Hospital in 1980. He served as assistant administrator of support services from 1998 until he was promoted to vice president of professional services and business development in 2006. In these roles he led development of the hospital’s Cancer Care Center, expansion and renovation of the Heart & Vascular Center, implementation of the Human Motion Institute and relocation of the Sleep Disorders Center to the Holiday Inn-Alton.
Braasch holds a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy and master’s degree in business administration from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He is active in community organizations, serving as president of the American Diabetes Association Leadership Council for Madison County and as a member of the North Alton-Godfrey Business Council.
Daniel J. Rothery, President, Boone Hospital Center
Boone Hospital Center has been a leader in meeting the health-care needs of mid-Missourians since its founding in 1921. Located in Columbia, Missouri, this regional referral center has earned a reputation for excellence in cardiovascular medicine, obstetrics, neurology, mental health services, oncology and emergency medical services. Through progressive health-care programs, services and technology, Boone Hospital Center continues its tradition of providing quality health care and excellent customer service.
Ronald B. McMullen, FACHE, President, Christian Hospital
As president of Christian Hospital, McMullen leads a 493-bed acute-care medical center in north St. Louis County. Christian Hospital is noted for its excellence in heart services, cardiothoracic surgery, emergency medicine, neurosurgery, cancer treatment, psychiatric services and substance abuse programs, radiology, urology, pulmonology and radiation oncology. McMullen also oversees Northwest HealthCare, six miles west of Christian Hospital and offering the community 24-hour emergency care, a variety of outpatient diagnostic and imaging services (such as MRI, CT, general radiology, ultrasound and women’s services), and a breathing center and sleep lab. Northwest HealthCare offers care in a convenient setting to complement hospital services.
McMullen served as president of Alton Memorial Hospital from 1986 to 2007. He originally joined Alton Memorial as an assistant administrator in 1983. McMullen previously served as vice president of St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, and as an administrative resident at Pontiac General Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan.
McMullen completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, then earned a master’s degree in hospital and health care administration from St. Louis University. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He serves on the board of the Illinois Hospital Association and is a past-president of IHA’s Region 4. He holds board memberships with the local Headstart program and the United Way chapters in Alton, Illinois; and St. Louis.
Robert Sellers, President, Clay County Hospital
Sellers was regional administrator of Alegent Health’s Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley, Iowa, for the past nine years. In this role, Sellers was responsible for all operations of Community Memorial Hospital and 14 Alegent Health clinic sites throughout Southwestern Iowa and eastern Nebraska. Under his leadership, Community Memorial Hospital achieved a 98.8 percent clinical quality rating on Medicare’s core measures and received a “5 star” rating on cardiac care from HealthGrades. Sellers also led the hospital to increased market share and improved financial performance.
Prior to his position at Community Memorial Hospital, Sellers served as chief executive officer of Charles Drew Health Center; administrator of the Department of Family Practice at Creighton University; and chief financial officer and director of managed care at Ehrling Berquist Hospital at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. A 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Sellers holds a master’s degree in health services administration from Central Michigan University and a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University.
Joan R. Magruder, President, Missouri Baptist Medical Center
Magruder served as BJC vice president of business development, physician services and alternate care sites for six years prior to her April 2006 appointment as president of Missouri Baptist Medical Center. Prior to joining BJC, Magruder was administrator of the department of surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, consistently ranked at the top among America's Best Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report.
Tony L. Schwarm, President, Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital
As president of Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital, Schwarm oversees a 75-bed acute-care hospital providing health-care services to residents of Crawford, Franklin and Washington counties. In recent years the Hospital has been expanded to include a medical office building, a new Emergency Department, and renovation of the Radiology Department and obstetrics unit.
Previously, Schwarm was president of Clay County Hospital in Flora, Illinois.
Tom Karl, President, Parkland Health Center
Since 2008, Karl has been president of Parkland Health Center, a full-service 130-bed acute care hospital and a free-standing professional services building in Farmington, Missouri; and a 3-bed Critical Access Hospital in Bonne Terre, Missouri. Parkland Health Center provides quality primary care, full inpatient and outpatient services, and 24-hour, physician-staffed emergency services. Karl first joined the hospital in 1985 as chief financial officer and assistant administrator of operations. He currently serves on the board of directors of Surgery Center of Farmington, Community Foundation for Medical Care and the Conservation Federation of Missouri. He also is involved in local prison, shut-in and hospital ministries.

Progress West HealthCare Center, which opened in February 2007, is BJC HealthCare's newest hospital. The first phase of the Hospital includes 72 beds, a 24-hour Emergency Department, medical/surgical inpatient care, outpatient surgery, diagnostic services, obstetrics and physician offices. The Hospital staff places a special emphasis on service excellence, convenience and family-centered care.
Progress West HealthCare Center is the first and only Hospital in the southern section of St. Charles County, which has twice the projected growth rate of St. Charles County, already among the fastest growing regions in the United States. The Hospital can expand to meet the emerging health care needs of the community.
Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital is a 110-bed community Hospital in St. Charles County, the fastest growing county in Missouri and offers full inpatient services, including 24-hour physidian-staffed emergency, pediatric, obstetric and intensive-care coverage.

bara Jacobsmeyer, Chief Executive Officer, Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis
The Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis provides a full range of acute inpatient, outpatient and community rehabilitation services for patients with stroke, brain and spinal cord injuries; cancer; and neurologic and orthopedic conditions. The facility, which opened in March 2001, is a joint partnership between BJC HealthCare and HealthSouth Corporation. The Institute and its medical staff also conduct major rehabilitative research and education programs through an affiliation with Washington University School of Medicine. Jacobsmeyer's 20 years of health care experience include four years as chief operating officer of Des Peres Hospital. Jacobsmeyer earned her master's degree in halth services management from Webster University and her undergraduate degree in physical therapy from St. Louis University.
