Supporting Communities

As a nonprofit community benefit organization, BJC HealthCare’s primary responsibility is to the community. Certainly, BJC’s top priority is the health of patients and families, but the size and scale of BJC also contribute substantially to the region’s economy. As one of the largest private employers in the state of Missouri, BJC’s payroll and capital spending add $1.62 billion to the local economy each year.

By continually upgrading its hospitals and other facilities, BJC supports employment in the design and construction industries. BJC has increased participation by minority-owned and women-owned firms on BJC construction projects. In 2007, BJC exceeded its goal of using minority-owned and women-owned firms for 15 percent of its construction contracting, achieving 19.5 percent participation from these firms.

As a corporate citizen, BJC HealthCare also is involved in the community. BJC leaders participate on many local chambers of commerce and in economic development initiatives led by the St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association, Civic Progress, St. Louis Regional Business Council, Partners for Progress of the Economic Development Center of St. Charles County and the Columbia Chamber of Commerce in mid-Missouri.

BJC HealthCare, Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine have invested significantly in the Forest Park Southeast community to support neighborhood revitalization and restoration.

Needing room for future expansion in the City of St. Louis, Barnes-Jewish Hospital expanded its long-term lease on a small portion of Forest Park, located above the hospital’s underground parking garage. The increased lease payments provide the City of St. Louis with a dedicated source of $2 million annually for Forest Park maintenance. A matching pledge from the civic group Forest Park Forever provides an additional $1.8 million annually for the park’s maintenance. The city’s former Forest Park maintenance budget will be used to upgrade and maintain other city parks.
