Promoting Health Literacy

BJC HealthCare improves the health of the region by promoting health literacy among its employees and within the community. Health literacy means helping people understand their own health status and encouraging them to take steps to improve it.

Concerned about poor health measures and committed to change, BJC has made a long-term commitment to improve health outcomes in targeted areas of the St. Louis region.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, compared with 35 similar metropolitan areas, St. Louis ranks:

  • 4th highest in deaths from heart disease
  • 6th highest in deaths from cancer
  • 7th highest in infant mortality

Over five years, BJC HealthCare is investing more than $17.5 million to help improve health in the community, with a concentration in the region’s six zip codes with the poorest health status measures. Health screenings, senior programs and school outreach curricula are being provided at no cost to area residents to increase awareness of and positively affect key health indicators.

By improving health literacy and access to health care services, particularly in areas that have been historically underserved, BJC HealthCare plays an important role in achieving better health in our region.
