Meeting Community Needs

BJC HealthCare provides more charity and unreimbursed care than any other health care organization in the state of Missouri – more than $144 million annually. The availability of charity care is critically important, particularly for people who do not have health insurance and lack access to a primary care physician. Changes to Missouri’s Medicaid program also have placed additional pressure on
those who do not have adequate resources to maintain their health.

BJC has initiated a variety of programs to encourage its 26,000 employees to actively manage their health and the health of their families. BJC shares best practices and invites employers and individuals to visit our web site to learn more about BJC’s employee health literacy offerings.

BJC HealthCare provides learning opportunities for children, adults and seniors about health topics in a variety of settings, including schools, churches, community centers and special events. Programs include health education classes, screenings for certain diseases, and weight management and smoking cessation seminars.

BJC initiated a public health literacy campaign in 2007 called, “I’m Ready!” The campaign encourages people to improve five key indicators of good health – blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, body mass index and smoking risks. By calling 314-747-7234 or by going online, individuals can receive a guide to help learn more about how to take action to improve their health.

BJC HealthCare developed myHealthFolders, a secure, confidential web-based tool for managing personal health information that puts “your health in your hands.” First offered as a free lifetime benefit for BJC employees, myHealthFolders is now offered to other employers committed to providing it as a free health benefit to their employees. The program allows people to take responsibility for managing health information for themselves and their loved ones, and provides medical personnel immediate online access to important health care information and emergency contacts.
