Investing in Innovation

St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine have established the Children’s Discovery Institute with money raised in a record-breaking fundraising campaign. The research center partnership is focused on discovering cures for four of the most deadly or debilitating pediatric diseases through the Congenital Heart Disease Center, the Center for Musculoskeletal Disease, the McDonnell Pediatric Cancer Center and the Center for Pediatric Pulmonary Disease.

BJC HealthCare is utilizing Lean Sigma methods throughout the organization to improve the process of providing health care. Employing a combination of quality improvement approaches, Lean Sigma techniques are helping “high-impact” teams across BJC reduce variability and simplify processes so that patients receive better health care and BJC operates even more efficiently.

BJC HealthCare and Washington University School of Medicine are working together to establish a Center for Biomedical Informatics to integrate clinical data, genetic findings, evidence-based treatment measures and therapeutic research. This partnership, which will use advanced computerized data search and analytical tools, offers a real opportunity to accelerate medical discovery and personalized
patient care treatment plans. As the amount of medical information available to health care professionals expands exponentially, the need for these advanced information technology tools will become even more critical to reduce the complexity of health care diagnosis, enhance patient safety, develop new ways to treat illness and promote community health.
