BJC HealthCare is celebrating its fifteenth birthday in 2008. We’re proud of our 15 years working together to improve both individual health and the health of our community. It has been an amazing journey for our 13 hospitals and multiple health service organizations that range in age from 125 years to one year. It’s also been an exciting time for our 26,000 employees in Missouri and Illinois who every day renew their pledge to provide excellent care to our patients and their families. BJC’s size and diversity are core strengths of our organization. As the largest employer in the St. Louis area, BJC HealthCare has a substantial impact on the economic health of our region. As the largest provider of charity care in the state of Missouri, BJC is an important part of the health care safety net. Collectively, our hospitals and service organizations provide more than $144 million in free health care annually to those in need. BJC has initiated a variety of programs to help people, including our own employees, understand their health risks and to encourage them to take steps to improve their health. These programs are offered throughout the community in schools, neighborhoods, places of work and places of worship. Since 1993, BJC HealthCare has been a community benefit organization delivering excellent patient care, improving access to health care and health information, inspiring a knowledgeable and caring workforce, enhancing our facilities and our communities and investing in research to promote advances in health care. Our focus on learning and innovation is leading to better health and better health care throughout Missouri and southern Illinois. This report shares how we deliver on these promises every day – as well as how we’re preparing for the future.
