Expanding Facilities BJC HealthCare spends more than $250 million annually on capital improvements such as renovation, expansion, new construction and new technology to better serve patients and their families. Recognizing the importance of close-tohome emergency services for many patients, all BJC hospital emergency departments will have undergone expansion and renewal during this decade. The newest BJC HealthCare hospital, Progress West HealthCare Center, opened in February 2007 in a rapidly growing area in southern St. Charles County. Progress West HealthCare Center is uniquely designed to support patients and their families. For example, every room is private, and each bed faces a window with a view of the outdoors and lots of natural daylight. Through the interactive touch screens in each room, patients can access health education programs and will be able to order meals at their convenience. Through technology, facility design and a culture of extraordinary service, Progress West is delivering better health care. The East Bay expansion at St. Louis Children’s Hospital added seven floors to the east side of the 12-story hospital. This project helps accommodate the growing number of families from across the country and around the world seeking care at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. In December 2006, the Boone Hospital Board of Trustees extended BJC HealthCare’s lease to operate Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, Mo., through 2015. A new $120 million patient tower planned at Boone will help the hospital remain the hospital of choice in mid-Missouri. The 60,000-square-foot expansion and renovation project at Missouri Baptist Hospital-Sullivan has been completed. Missouri Baptist Medical Center opened its new East Pavilion in January 2007. The five-story, 150,000-square-foot, $49.7 million facility houses a new emergency department, cancer center, cardiovascular care area and pediatric care center. Alton Memorial Hospital is building a new inpatient wing featuring private rooms and state-of-the-art design features. The 78,000-square-foot facility will improve patient care areas and enhance the work environment for hospital staff. The expansion also will create space in the hospital to house new education programs in the health professions. Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University Orthopedics have partnered to provide outpatient orthopedic services in a new patient-centered facility in Chesterfield, Mo. Opened in 2007, the 60,000-square-foot, $13 million orthopedic center offers outpatient surgery, modern digital imaging, electrophysiology and pain injections in one convenient location. Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital has begun a $28 million expansion featuring a three-story addition for inpatient beds, offices and a pharmacy. Parkland Health Center in Farmington, Mo., will open a new and expanded emergency department in 2008.
