Emergency Preparedness

In the event of a local or regional emergency, BJC HealthCare professionals will be on the front lines responding to the needs of the community and caring for people affected by a disaster. BJC works to ensure our hospitals are adequately prepared to respond to potential biological, chemical or radiological incidents and natural disasters.

BJC is an active participant in the St. Louis Area Regional Response System (STARRS). Since 1999, two of BJC’s emergency preparedness professionals have served as co-chairs of the STARRS Advisory Board and the STARRS regional hospital committee. Two of BJC’s hospitals are considered Tier 1, meaning they maintain a high level of preparedness to respond to mass-casualty events.

BJC participates regularly in disaster drills to test our preparedness and make any needed improvements. In June 2005, BJC participated in a regional drill to test our area’s capability to provide mass distribution of medication in the event of a biological incident.
