BJC HealthCare is the largest private employer in the St. Louis region
and one of the largest employers in the state of Missouri. Our employees
contribute significantly to the economic health of our region. In
addition, BJC invests the majority of our net revenue to maintain,
expand and improve our facilities, equipment and technology. Some of the initiatives BJC supports are aimed at improving the neighborhoods surrounding the Washington University School of Medicine campus. Forest Park Southeast, the neighborhood to the south, has struggled for years to stabilize and upgrade its housing stock and stimulate commercial development. The medical school, BJC HealthCare and Barnes-Jewish Hospital founded an organization dedicated to the redevelopment of the Forest Park Southeast |
neighborhood. To date, the partnership has built a new elementary
school, community center, police office and senior housing, and has
increased the availability of rehabilitated housing in the area. BJC HealthCare also has invested significantly in CORTEX, the effort to develop a biomedical research hub in the 1,000-acre area of midtown St. Louis between Washington University, St. Louis University and the Missouri Botanical Garden. The first 40,000-square-foot building in what is anticipated to become a major research center is now complete. This and other similar projects will help St. Louis attract and retain growing biotechnology companies in Missouri’s developing “Bio Belt.” |
