In addition to providing health-care services and outreach programs in the community, BJC HealthCare works to help employees stay healthy. BJC introduced an employee health literacy initiative, “Help for Your Health,” in 2003. The goal was to improve employee understanding of personal health risks and to provide resources to help them lower their risks. The initiative has been received very positively among employees and continues to grow with additional offerings. Current “Help for Your Health” programs include special recognition for significant health achievements, medical premium discounts, free smoking cessation classes, employee health fairs, discounts on Weight Watchers and YMCA memberships and partnerships with Schnucks, Subway and Morrison’s to promote healthful eating. In addition, BJC has developed myHealthFolders.com, a new convenient, confidential and secure web-based tool to help individuals organize, store and retrieve personal health |
information electronically. It is available to all BJC employees as a free benefit. BJC also is partnering with area employers to offer the same program to their employees as part of BJC’s commitment to promoting health literacy in our community. The myHealthFolders program allows members to record, track and update important health information such as medical history, emergency contacts, test results, physician contacts and prescription and non-prescription medications. The information is saved so that it can be accessed in the future and updated as needed, but it will remain secure and confidential, available only to the member and anyone they designate. As an added benefit, members can print an emergency wallet card to enable medical personnel to access their medical history, medications, and physician and family contacts quickly. BJC committed $347,000 to the development and staffing of this program in 2005. |
