BJC HealthCare provides health-care outreach programs for children and adults throughout the region to help them understand the key determinants of good health. For example, BJC’s School Outreach and Youth Development program is one of the most extensive in the region, providing services to public, private and parochial school districts in Missouri and Illinois. The staff works in partnership with school faculty and administration to develop health programs appropriate for students. Services range from one-time speaking opportunities, health fairs and job shadowing to long-term health education curricula. The program focuses on health issues and behaviors, such as drug, alcohol and tobacco use; nutrition and fitness; sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS; safety; stress management; and violence prevention. For adults 50 years of age and older, BJC sponsors OASIS, an educational and volunteer service organization. |
Membership is free and includes medical insurance counseling; discounts at participating pharmacies, hospital cafeterias and gift shops; and parking benefits at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. One of the most important programs offered by OASIS is HealthStages, a health promotion program that helps older adults identify health risks, develop action plans and make healthy changes so they can remain active and independent. BJC HealthCare also partners with others to meet the community’s needs. For example, BJC is partnering with other St. Louis area hospitals and the Interfaith Partnership of Metropolitan St. Louis to offer a faith-based health outreach program to improve the health of the medically underserved. The unique collaboration, called Healthy Mind-Body-Spirit (HMBS), provides medical screenings, education and other services in partnership with churches in St. Louis communities with disproportionate health |
