BJC’s two academic medical centers,
Barnes-Jewish
Hospital and
St. Louis
Children’s Hospital, are affiliated with Washington University
School of Medicine. Through this partnership, BJC helps prepare the next
generation of medical professionals. Our academic medical centers offer unique opportunities for medical education in the form of residency training, fellowships, exposure to world-class research, and participation in advanced patient care, including transplant services, international health and community experiences. Part of the additional cost of training physicians in the hospital setting is shared by the state and federal government through Graduate Medical Education (GME) and Indirect Medical Education (IME) payments to academic medical centers. |
In 2004, 1,342 future nurses and allied health professionals were
training in BJC-supported programs. In addition, more than 4,600 nurses
and medical professionals attended training programs and refresher
courses offered by the
Clinical Nursing Institute on the campus of
Missouri Baptist
Medical Center to maintain and enhance their skills. In addition to educating health professionals, BJC provides professional development opportunities for all employees. Since 2004, BJC has awarded 13 scholarships to employees pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing. In 2005, BJC HealthCare launched The Leadership Institute, a learning initiative to prepare the next generation of BJC leaders to meet tomorrow’s health-care challenges. |
