Leading in Customer Service

In 2003, Alton Memorial Hospital’s emergency department implemented the "RISE & Shine" program to help improve the experience of people seeking emergency care. The program has helped place Alton Memorial Hospital in the top 10 percent for patient satisfaction among hospitals rated by Professional Research Consultants. Alton emergency department staff surveyed patients by telephone and learned that patients wanted more time with caregivers and more communication during their visit. “RISE & Shine,” which focuses on customer service, communication and compassion, was developed in response to this need. RISE stands for Respect, Inform, Serve and Excel, and the program uses incentives to motivate employees to shine among their peers.
