Currently Barnes-Jewish Hospital is renovating and adding operating rooms to meet growing needs and accommodate new technology. At St. Louis Children’s Hospital, a $75 million expansion and renovation project will add seven floors to meet the growing demand for additional newborn intensive care, operating rooms and ambulatory space. Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital has started construction on a new, expanded emergency department.

BJC makes significant capital investments at its hospitals in every community we serve: St. Louis City, North St. Louis County, West St. Louis County, St. Charles County, Columbia, Mo., Alton, Ill., and our rural communities. On average, BJC spends more than $250 million on capital improvements each year.

BJC’s capital investments are only one way we contribute to the community and our local economy. BJC is the largest employer in the St. Louis metropolitan area, and one of the largest private employers in the state of Missouri. By employing health-care workers and providing convenient healthcare services, BJC has an enormous direct positive impact on regional economic development. And, when money from our payroll is spent in our area, it also spurs additional growth, which is another way BJC contributes to the health of our region.

Growing Services

BarnesCare, the occupational health service offered to St. Louis area companies through BJC Corporate Health Services, recognized a growing need for on-site nursing care for workers compensation case management, employee health education and other types of care. In 2003, BarnesCare added the Corporate Health Nurse Program to allow local employers to contract for workplace nursing services on a full- or part-time basis.

BJC Medical Group also continued to help grow the physician base in the metropolitan region by recruiting doctors, establishing practices and providing administrative support. For example, BJC Medical Group staff have added six new primary care physicians in North St. Louis County in the past two years to better serve the community close to Christian Hospital. In addition, seven physicians in Alton, Ill., are remaining in the area after accepting employment with BJC.
