BJC HealthCare continually assesses the growing and changing health-care needs of our communities, and adds facilities and services to keep pace. As a nonprofit organization, we use our financial resources to reinvest in the infrastructure and technology necessary to maintain access to high-quality care.

BJC is investing $22.7 million to redevelop and expand key services at our two health-care facilities in North St. Louis County. Northwest HealthCare, a unique outpatient diagnostic center with 24-hour emergency care, which will be paired with complementary retail space, will be complete in late 2004.The facility is designed with the capacity to double in size to meet the projected increased demand for services at this location.

At Christian Hospital, a new $2 million linear accelerator brings the latest technology to North County for the benefit of cancer patients. In addition, the hospital opened a new Chest Pain Center in 2004 to serve as a one-stop diagnostic and treatment center for individuals with chest pain and cardiac conditions.

BJC recently completed a three-year $21.6 million construction project at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital in St. Charles County to add space and expand services for the community, including a new emergency department, a new ambulatory surgery center, and a new hospital addition with expanded cardiology and women’s services. In 2003, Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital was voted the #1 hospital in a readers’ poll conducted by the Suburban Journals of St. Charles County.

At Missouri Baptist Hospital–Sullivan a major expansion project recently upgraded the admitting, registration and lab service areas; imaging center and emergency and obstetrics departments. Parkland Health Center opened a new geriatric psychiatry unit to server the mental health needs of older adults in the Farmington and St. Francois County area in Missouri. And Clay County Hospital, which opened a new hospital in 2000 and a new medical office and outpatient treatment facility in 2004, continues to serve the heath-care needs of patients in Flora, Ill., and the surrounding region.

St. Charles County is the fastest-growing region in Missouri and one of the fastest-growing counties in the United States. To help serve this rapidly growing population, in December 2003, BJC HealthCare proposed building a new, 72-bed community hospital in southern St. Charles County. After receiving approval from the state of Missouri in March, BJC broke ground on Progress West HealthCare Center in the summer of 2004. The new hospital will include an emergency unit, medical/surgical inpatient care, outpatient surgery, diagnostic services and obstetrics. Scheduled to open in early 2006, the hospital is being built with the ability to expand in the future to meet emerging needs of the community. According to an economic impact study conducted by Development Strategies, the new hospital will have a positive economic impact of $616 million in St. Charles County during the construction period and first four years of operation.
